If you’ve been following us for a while, you’ll know that 549 Family has been big supporters of the Laurentian Experience for 8th Graders. This project marks Grant #3 for the 2019-20 School Year.
The Laurentian Experience is an interdisciplinary unit that focuses on building lifelong learning skills in the area of teamwork and outdoor survival. It is designed so that every eighth-grade student has the opportunity to work with their peers and develop leadership skills that might not occur within the traditional classroom setting.
PWMS expects every eighth-grade student to be allowed to experience this program. The students at Laurentian experience a hands-on curriculum that has been developed by the PWMS eighth grade staff in collaboration with Laurentian. The students are assessed by both their reflections in their journals and their work as members of a team. The Laurentian staff is also seeking to add a mental health component to the Journey program that will be supported by a Perham family. We feel that this additional support will add much to the current mental health climate at PWMS.
